Giving the details, Padma Shri and Dr B C Roy National & DST National Science Communication Awardee Dr K K Aggarwal, President Heart Care Foundation of India and Mr. R S P Sinha, President Citizens’ Forum in a joint statement said that children with congenital heart disease who may not be able to afford the treatment can approach the Foundation for assistance.
The Foundation will provide them free diagnosis and facilitate treatment at various hospitals in Delhi NCR. The assistance will be only for non-emergent planned surgical treatments. The Foundation reserves the right to reject or accept any application.
Most congenital heart disease today can be corrected surgically and the child can live a near normal life. Lakhs of children in India die every year because they cannot afford surgical intervention.
The Foundation has started a campaign called ‘Murmur’ under which awareness is being created about how to diagnose a child with congenital heart disease, which includes holes in the heart.
A murmur is an abnormal rumbling sound which can be auscultated by a stethoscope on the heart area. Even paramedics can pick up a murmur. All children with a murmur need evaluation to rule out underlying congenital heart disease.
